Business start-up: enough negativity!

I’m a big believer in not thinking that the worst case is the most likely case.  Whilst it might be a good emotional hedge to lower expectations so that reality surprises on the upside, it can’t be sensible or healthy to always think that the worst case is always the most likely.  So despite an upbringing steeped in worst case scenarios, I refuse to be negative.  I switch off the negative thought patterns by imagining that the voices in my head are the old guys in the Muppets (Statler and Waldorf), the ones that do nothing but heckle, and I carefully pick up the mental remote and jam down the OFF button.  Hard.

One of the toughest things about starting up a new business is keeping the energy and momentum going when everything takes longer and costs more than your initial expectations.  Statler (or maybe it was Waldorf) once said to me “Double your costs, halve your revenue, double the time to market” and I thought they were just being a rainy day kind of person.  Well now it’s a rainy day and I realise they were being pretty accurate.  How very annoying.  Where’s that OFF button?
